Abstract

Most research on the analysis of growth, particularly the family of value-added models, has focused on using observational longitudinal data to estimate causal effects associated with teachers and schools. Setting causal attribution aside, this paper describes how growth can be employed to better understand process. A Markov transition model utilizing performance levels is employed to describe how students move through the performance levels of a state assessment over time.
