  1. Beyond AYP: Using Growth Model Data to Improve Teaching and Learning in Three States 2010 CCSSO NCSA, Detroit, MI Damian W. Betebenner NCIEA
  2. A Tale of Three (many) States • States are wrestling with the development and implementation of growth models. • The Growth Model Pilot Program (GMPP) promoted the development of models geared toward AYP “bright line” policies • Some states are rumored to have “buyer’s remorse” with their GMPP models
  3. Multiple Goals • Goals extend beyond AYP • Different growth models are often tailored to answer different questions. • It is essential to specify the questions one wants to answer. • Question: Can AYP questions/uses as well as other questions be addressed with a single model? • Some states are investigating multiple growth models (is this really the answer?)
  4. What is the “End Game” • Calculating “growth” is the easy part. • Massachusetts reminds us of the critical role associated with rolling out a growth model. • The data don’t speak for themselves. • From my experience, states should expect a minimum two year process to stand up a growth model.
