- Considerations for 2022 with ILEARN Student Growth Damian Betebenner & Adam Van Iwaarden Center for Assessment Indiana Weekly Meeting February 4th, 2022
- Consideration for ILEARN SGP Calculations in 2022 • Cohort versus Baseline Referenced SGP Calculations • Achievement goal for students • Proficiency • Catching up to pre-COVID achievement trajectory • Timeline to reach achievement goal for students • 4 years • When should the clock start on students reaching that goal? 2022? 2019? • The most consequential decisions are determining the Achievement Goal and the Timeline to reach that goal. • Cohort and baseline referenced SGP projections will yield the same determinations about a student being on track to those achievement goals. - Cohort versus Baseline Referenced SGPs • Cohort versus Baseline Referenced SGPs is a tale of two speedometers. • Cohort: 2021 to 2022 normed growth. • Baseline: 2018 to 2019 normed growth. • For each grade and content areas: • Cohort referenced SGPs have a mean/median of 50. • Baseline referenced SGPs don’t necessarily have a mean/median of 50. • Cohort referenced SGPs canNOT show impact (deceleration) or recover (acceleration) • Baseline referenced SGP can show impact and recovery. - Cohort versus Baseline Referenced SGPs • There was deceleration in learning from 2019 to 2021 (cohort) compared to 2017 to 2019 (baseline) in Indiana. • We do not know how growth will compare 2021 to 2022 (cohort) with that of 2018 to 2019 (baseline) • Deceleration continues (more COVID impact) • Back to normal rates of growth/learning • Acceleration (recovery) • The choice of cohort versus baseline referenced is only relevant if you want to support pre-COVID versus COVID acceleration/deceleration comparisons. - Cohort versus Baseline Referenced SGPs and Projections • Projections/Targets are possible using either cohort or baseline referenced SGPs. • Determinations of whether the student hit their target will be the same regardless of whether you use cohort or baseline referenced SGPs/projections. • Determinations will be the same because the achievement goal (end point) and time frame to reach that goal are fixed.
